Harris Neck is a peninsula, 40 miles south of Savannah in McIntosh County, one of the last unspoiled areas of the south eastern coast.  Since 1962 Harris Neck has been a National Wildlife Refuge, but its significant history dates back to the rice-growing plantation's of the late 1700's.

The Story of Harris Neck- Our Mission

The Harris Neck Land Trust, officially established in 2005, is the organization that represents all the surviving African American families that lived on Harris Neck until 1942. The few White families that owned property but did not live in Harris Neck have also been invited to join the Trust. The Trust was created by and is comprised of former Harris Neck community members and their descendants.  It is the central and guiding unit of the Harris Neck Justice Movement, the effort to achieve long delayed justice for the people of Harris Neck.

Public Release - Descended: The fight for Harris Neck

The documentary film “Descended: The Fight for Harris Neck” explores an ongoing land battle in Harris Neck, Georgia. In 1942 the U.S. war department seized 2,687 acres of land from a self-reliant community of seventy-five African American families. Since 1962 the land has been a national wildlife refuge. The film seeks to answer the pivotal question: How has a community been shaped by its common goal to reclaim their land?
